History of Black Dance: 20th-Century Black American Dance

Harlem Renaissance

Black culture had a real influence on dance and other art forms in the 20th century. After the American civil war a surge of people from the Caribbean and Deep South migrated into North American cities. In New York the district of Harlem became home to black people from different cultural traditions with their own dances and music.

Harlem became the ‘in place’ to be amongst both black and white New Yorkers – its clubs brought together dance and music that was alive and exciting. Dances such as the Charleston, Lindyhop and Jitterbug sprang from these clubs as did Jazz music. The influence of this Harlem Renaissance on music and dance in New York in the early 1920s spread into Europe.

1444: Europeans trade on the west coast of Africa with people wearing elaborate hairstyles, including locks, plaits and twists.

1619: First slaves brought to Jamestown; African language, culture and grooming tradition begin to disappear.

1700s: Calling black hair “wool,” many whites dehumanize slaves. The more elaborate African hairstyles cannot be retained.

1800s: Without the combs and herbal treatments

One of the things I love about my natural hair is its versatility. I can wear a kinky twist out one day and the next day I can be seen wearing shiny, smooth curls. Manipulating my hair has always been fun for me. On the rare occasion that I do wear a wash n’ go and people ask “Did you cut your hair?,” I just giggle silently at their lack of knowledge about shrinkage. Sometimes people just can’t wrap their brain around the fact that hair can be gigantic one day and short the next.

The 5-foot-10-inch leggy beauty refutes the old adage “beauty and no brains,” as she is currently studying law at South Bank University and she is fluent in Russian and Ukrainian languages.

Tomiko Fraser Hines hails from the Bronx, N.Y., and is best known for becoming the first African- American spokeswoman for Maybelline, from 2001-2007. She is also the longest serving spokesperson for any cosmetics company and it is easy to see why: Her beauty is exceptional and Maybelline couldn’t get enough of it.

Veronique Boubane, a beauty from Senegal, who now lives in Belgium, won Miss Belgique in 2008.

Nigerian model Adaora Akubilo, born in Windsor, Conn., mesmerized readers when she graced the pages of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue in 2013.

Damaris Lewis has one of those faces you never forget. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, the 23-year-old model has stamped her beauty on the 2009, 2010, and 2011 Sports Illustrated swimsuit issues. Lewis is well trained in performing arts, has appeared in the music video for Kanye West’s single “Monster” and was selected by Prince to be his muse and dancer during his Welcome 2 Australia Tour 2012 with The New Power Generation.
